About Us

The Vernon Johnson Award recognizes people who are in long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol or other drugs who have given back to their communities so that future generations can experience the reality of recovery.

America Honors Recovery evening reception June 27, 2012

Please nominate people who are in long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol or other drugs. Nominees should be putting a public face and voice on recovery and striving to make sustained recovery possible for even more Americans. The nominee must:

    1. Be very active in promoting awareness of the reality of recovery to the public, policymakers, the media, and others for at least 10 years.
    2. Be working to change systems, programs or practices to remove barriers and support recovery.
    3. Be an advocate for local, state and federal policies that support recovery as part of the organized recovery community


Nominations for the Vernon Johnson Award are welcomed from individuals and organizations. The nominator should be someone who is well acquainted with the nominee and can attest to his or her specific contributions. Please download this form to submit a nomination. Nomination Recommendation

Please use the Nomination Form to address the following points:

  1. Explain your relationship to the nominee and how long you have known him or her.
  2. Provide specific examples on how the nominee’s contributions have worked toward advancing recovery.
  3. Describe the communities or constituencies the nominee has worked with. Provide examples of how the nominee has used his or her relationship with recovery to remove barriers and support recovery.

Resume/Biographical Sketch of Nominee

Please use the Nomination Form to provide a resume or biographical sketch that is no more than 2 pages long and includes:


A selection committee made up of members of the Faces & Voices of Recovery and Hazelden Foundation Board of Directors will decide on the recipients based on the selection criteria outlined in the Nomination Guidelines and Requirements.

All nominations will be acknowledged by email. The individuals receiving the award will be contacted directly by the selection committee and will be honored at the America Honors Recovery evening reception in Washington, DC on June 27, 2012.
