Event: Rally for Recovery! 2009

This year Faces & Voices of Recovery worked with local and state recovery community organizations and allies to hold Rally for Recovery! marches, walks, town-hall meetings, picnics and other events all on the same day – Saturday September 12, 2009. An estimated 70,000 people attended over 90 events, reporting on their events by calling in to the national “hub” event, A&E's Recovery Project Brooklyn Bridge Recovery Walk in New York City.

Thanks to the many organizations who participated in our monthly organizing calls and to Aaron Kucharski for making the calls possible. Stay tuned for an announcement about the date of the 2010 Rally for Recovery!

And thanks to the many individuals who registered to vote and emailed their members of Congress about health reform as part of their Rally for Recovery! and Recovery Month observances!

Our partnership with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, The Partnership for a Drug-Free America and the National Recovery Month Planning Partners made September 12, Brooklyn Bridge Recovery Rally the largest even ever, drawing over 10,000 friends of recovery. The 51 individuals who were selected as 2009 Recovery Delegates led off the walk along with Office of National Drug Control Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment Director Dr. Westley Clark and other dignitaries.

In a growing number of communities, recovery advocates organized first-ever events - softball games, picnics and walks - putting a face and a voice on recovery in their communities.

2009 also marked the 20th anniversary of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. (Please make sure to register your 2009 events on the Recovery Month web site!)
