Event: Rally for Recovery! 2010
Faces & Voices of Recovery will be working with local and state recovery community organizations and allies to hold Rally for Recovery! marches, walks, town-hall meetings, picnics and other events all on the same day – Saturday September 25, 2010.
Faces & Voices of Recovery is pleased to partner with PRO-ACT as the national hub for the 2010 Rally for Recovery!
Since 2006, Faces & Voices of Recovery has worked with recovery community organizations and their allies across the United States to come together to plan events to celebrate recovery and make their voices count by advocating for specific issues and policy changes. In 2007, the issue was ending insurance discrimination facing people with addiction and mental illness. In 2008, the issue was nonpartisan civic engagement in the 2008 elections. Rally for Recovery! events are organized all across the country, with one event serving as the “hub.”
In 2007, a coalition of groups organized by Friends of Addiction Recovery New Jersey brought people together in Liberty State Park, New Jersey, where people listened to music, registered to vote, e-mailed their elected officials, signed petitions and celebrated recovery. Over 30,000 people attended 60 events that year. In 2008, the Rally for Recovery “hub” was the St. Louis, MO “Hands Across the Bridge” and over 40,000 people attended events across the nation. In 2009, New York City’s A&E Recovery Project Rally was the national “hub” with over 70,000 people attending over 90 events across the country.
The 2010 hub will be on Saturday, September 25, 2010 in Philidelphia, PA in partnership with PRO-ACT (Pennsylvania Recovery Organization - Achieving Community Together). Our goal is for 100,000 people to turn out for recovery across the nation as part of Rally for Recovery! At the events, people in recovery, their families, friends and allies are encouraged to participate in civic life through voter registration and education and celebrate their growing visibility. They are joined by a vast array of elected officials, celebrities, public officials, law enforcement officers and allies. Each Rally for Recovery! event reflects the interests of organizers, frequently combining family activities like face painting, music and food with advocacy activities like walks around the State Capitol and opportunities to meet and speak with elected officials. People from around the country will be calling in to the Philadelphia “hub” to report on the number of walkers, runners and participants at their local events, raising the national profile of the growing recovery movement.
Last year on September 12, 2009, an estimated 70,000 people attended over 90 events, reporting on their events by calling in to the national “hub” event, A&E's Recovery Project Brooklyn Bridge Recovery Walk in New York City.

Engage local business sponsors
Pee Dee FAVOR in Florence, South Carolina, reached out to many local businesses and organizations for sponsorship: St. John’s Parish; Circle Park; BOG, Inc.; Starting Point of Florence; First Reliance Bank; South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services; Celebrate Recovery; Dick’s Sporting Goods; Redbone Alley; Longhorn Steakhouse; Books-a-Million, Target, and Naturally Outdoors Outfitters.
Invite elected officials
The Missouri Recovery Network worked with their Governor to have a signing of the Recovery Month proclamation and press event at teh State Capitol in Jefferson City, MO, followed by an Open House at their offices.
Citizens Activated to Change Healthcare (CATCH) in Chicago welcomed U.S. Congressman Danny Davis, State Representative LaShon Ford and Chicago Aldermen Walter Burnett and Ed Smith to its Chicago Park District Rally.
Ninety people registered to vote at the event organized by Allston Brighton Substance Abuse Task Force in Brighton, Massachusetts, where participants heard from State Senator Steven Tolman and State Representatives Kevin Honan and Michael Moran after a 5K Walk.
The Central Illinois Recovery Coalition in Springfield, Illinois, welcomed State Representative Raymond Poe and Springfield Alderman Gail M. Simpson. The coalition registered 20 voters.
Reach out to the media
Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) took out a full-page ad in the daily Hartford Courant (circulation 226,000) the day before its 8th Annual Recovery Walks!; placed radio public service announcements featuring event guest speaker Paul Williams; and distributed car magnets promoting the event.
FAVOR of the Midlands in Columbia, South Carolina, obtained two radio station sponsors of its event, which included the Carolina Circus Clowns featuring juggling, face-painting, balloon animals and other family focused activities.
