Our Stories

Richard Tucker

My name is Richie and I'm an alcoholic. 61 years old and my sober date is 1/7/2000. I came into recovery after 40 yrs alcohol and other substances and I lived in a cardboard box my last 20 years. I never worked but lived one day at a time to drink. By the end my body was shutting down. I did not eat only drank. I spent 17 years on Methadone but alcohol was always in my life. Going in and out of jail and hospitals did not deter me. I did not come into recovery because I couldn't take any more pain, I could but the GOD of my understanding decided I did not have to live like an animal any longer. Until I had lived with no hope in my life and no sense of purpose or use long enough GOD decided I was fit for use. I came into A.A. unable to walk or talk and today I work as a CASAC at an outpatient program now 4 yrs. I went back to college, got a degree as a paralegal, and then went to school for counseling. It is in helping others that I am at use. I keep A.A. and my work separate. My recovery is entirely spiritual based in 12 steps of A.A. In my eighth year I suffered depression and opted for a breakdown, not the drink, and GOD saw that I made it though that much stronger and fit for service. I went from living in a box to being a worker among workers and self supporting through my own contributions. I have paid taxes 4 years in a row. My 1st and only job came at age 57. I rebuilt my life in my 50's with the help of those in the rooms of A.A. and GOD. Thank you.
